The West Valley softball team captured its 14th consecutive win Monday, and, in the process, shut out its second CCCAA state top-six team in three days. The 1-0 victory over 4th-ranked Monterey Peninsula comes on the heels of Saturday's 7-0 blanking of #6 College of San Mateo and will surely move #12 WVC up the state rankings. More importantly, the Vikings improved to 22-5, 9-0 in the rugged Coast Conference, with their 10th shutout of the season.

A howling wind turned the game into a pitcher's duel between WVC's Shelby White and MPC's Avery Mytnik, with only five singles from the Vikings and four from the Lobos (24-4, 5-2) finding their way onto the scoresheet.

It was one of those singles, a 3rd-inning liner to left off the bat of Kaylee Ramirez, that produced the game-winner. Kassady Alcazar reached on an MPC outfield error to lead off the 3rd and advanced to third on an Emma Courtney sacrifice bunt and a Bella Sweet single. Alcazar crossed the plate three pitches later when Ramirez ripped a single over the shortstop into left-center. The run would prove to be the only one the Vikings would need.

The WVC defense was error-free for the fourth game in the last five in support of White, who struck out five and walked only one to earn her ninth win in the circle. Alcazar, Reyna Cruz, Isabella Gallegos, Ramirez and Sweet all had one hit apiece.

The five-game Viking homestand continues Thursday against Ohlone (8-16, 1-7). First pitch at Viking Field is 3:00pm.
