Vikings open Coast with 8th-inning walk-off win

Tyla Arbuckle roped an 8th-inning walk-off single up the middle in WVC's 4-3 win

Tyla Arbuckle roped an 8th-inning walk-off single up the middle in WVC's 4-3 win

Tyla Arbuckle added three stolen bases in Thursday's Coast Conference opener against Monterey Peninsula to increase her state-leading total to 33. More importantly, the fleet-footed center fielder, delivered the biggest hit so far in 2025, a one-out, two-strike shot up the middle in the bottom of the 8th that drove home Rylee Gomez and lifted West Valley to a 4-3 win over the Lobos at Viking Field.

Arbuckle's extra-inning heroics came after the Vikings (21-0, 1-0 Coast) had runners in scoring position in both the 6th and 7th, but came up empty. West Valley was up 3-0 through three, but gave up three to the Lobos (10-9, 0-1) in the top of the 4th.

West Valley jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st after Arbuckle led off with a single, stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on a throwing error by the Lobo shortstop. Andrea DeJesus also scored on the play, after getting plunked and stealing 2nd. WVC took advantage of another Lobo error in the 3rd with a solo run from Jasmine Mixco. The 3-0 lead didn't last long.

After a Viking error, MPC scored on back-to-back singles and evened it at 3-3 on a Johana Alonzo two-run double. The score remained the same into the 8th. MPC had runners on 1st and 2nd with one out in the top of the 8th, but consecutive pop outs ended the threat. Gomez opened the Viking half of the frame with an E3, followed by singles from Alexis Bojorquez-Nava and Makayla Villapando to load the bases. After an infield pop out for the 1st Viking out, Arbuckle sent the 3rd pitch she saw back to the box and into center field, bringing home Gomez with the game-winner.

Arbuckle finished 3-for-5 with three stolen bags and an RBI. DeJesus, Gomez and Brianna Chambers Lee all had two-hit outings. Ashlie Nakano started in the circle and went 4.2 innings, surrendering three runs on five hits, while striking out three and walking none. Alysia Elizarrey recorded 2.1 innings of two-hit, runless work, and Sarah Habkirk pitched the 8th to earn the win. The Vikings stole seven bases to increase its 3C2A-leading total to 73.
