Vikings dominate 2nd half, but leave LMC with scoreless tie
Natalia Barrera (L) and Rachel Sequeira battle the LMC keeper in 2nd half action.
West Valley spent the majority of the second half deep in Los Medanos territory, peppering the Mustang goalie with shot after shot. But, the Vikings (0-0-1) couldn't find the back of the net, leaving sweltering Pittsburg with a 0-0 tie to open the 2023 season.
With temperatures surpassing 110 on the new Los Medanos turf, the WVC offense steamrolled the LMC defense time and again after the break, but sent their shots wide or directly at goalie Maliah Alicea. Vikings Natalia Barrera, Amanda Lien, Katherine Meck and Rachel Sequeira repeatedly weaved their way through the Mustang defense only to be turned away.
Lien, who started in goal for WVC and then moved to forward late in the second half, and Nevaeh Reyes combined to earn the clean sheet.
West Valley makes its annual SoCal sojourn this weekend for the 2023 New Balance Showcase at Ventura College. WVC takes on Rio Hondo (0-0-0) Thursday at 11am and host Ventura (0-1-0) Saturday at 3pm.
