WVC splits with SoCal squads on opening weekend
Laura Hernandez controls the ball against Ventura
West Valley battled the Saratoga heat and a pair of top SoCal squads at the 2024 home-opening weekend at Dick Schwendinger Field. The Vikings (3-1-1) earned a split heading into an important non-conference fixture at perennial NorCal power Fresno City (1-1-0) Tuesday (9/10).
Laura Hernandez scored off a Katherine Meck feed at 2:36 to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead in a 1-1 draw with Ventura Friday. The Viking defense and keeper Nevaeh Reyes kept the Pirates (1-1-3) off the board until Lex Sahagian got the equalizer at 85'.
Cypress (5-0-0), the state's #2-ranked team, charged into Saratoga Sunday and returned to Orange County with a 6-1 win over the injury-depleted Vikings. Herndanez scored in the 72nd minute, her third goal in four games.
