Undefeated Vikings power past Cabrillo and Hartnell on the road

Saratoga, Calif. - The Vikings continue their undefeated season and pick up their 25th straight victory of the season after defeating Hartnell College and #7 Ranked Cabrillo College on the road.

The Vikings were completely dominant in the victory over Hartnell College, defeating them 91-52 on the road. West Valley (25-0) turned to the deep ball for a bulk of their points, knocking down 15 treys (second season-high) on 15-of-27 shooting (55.6%). Elijah Mahi, Baron Bracey, Aaron Ragen, and Jake Davis each led the way shooting 3-for-4 from deep. Additionally, Ariya Briscoe shot 1-for-2 and Robel Zemmo went 2-for-2 from three point range, contributing to the three point total respectively.

Shakir Odunewu posted an efficient 19-point night, leading the team in scoring while putting up 9-of-12 from the field and snatching eight rebounds. The Viking big man also added 2 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks in a simply dominant performance over the Panthers.

Elijah Mahi, Baron Bracey, and Robel Zemmo each put up 11 points to contribute to the Vikings scoring total. Mahi also pulled in 2 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals in his all around performance. Freshman Jake Davis contributed 12 points and two rebounds in solid minutes.

In total, West Valley had five players finish in double-figure scoring while shooting a second season-high total 15-for-27 (55.6%) from three-point range. The Vikings shot an overall 34-for-70 (48.6%) from the field in the win over the Panthers.

On Friday night, West Valley College Men's Basketball starting center Shakir Odunewu notched his fourth 20 plus point game of the season with a game-high 20 points and 15 rebounds, helping the VIkings power past No. 7 Cabrillo 71-58. The game is Odunewu's ninth double-double on the season, and his 15 rebound performance tied his second season-high.

The sophomore trio of Baron BraceyElijah Mahi, & Jeremiah Dargan also put on an offensive clinic on Friday evening, combining for 41 points to power West Valley College men's basketball over the Cabrillo Seahawks. Baron Bracey scored an efficient 14 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field, including a 2-for-4 mark from distance. The starting guard also hauled in seven rebounds and two assists.

Sophomore forward Elijah Mahi also put up 14 points while pulling in six rebounds, two steals, and dishing out four assists. Jeremiah Dargan also finished in double figure scoring, finishing with 13 points to go with two rebounds, three assists and three steals. Dargan shot 4-for-7 from the field and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.

Things looked interesting in the early goings for the Vikings as they found themselves in a back and forth battle in the opening half, but a 13-6 run and a huge three pointer by Aaron Ragen powered the Vikes back up seven to end the first half 32-25.

West Valley eventually stretched their lead to double figures once again in the second half, leading 44-29 with 15 minutes to play. It was all WVC from there as they mounted as much as a 16-point advantage before settling for the 13-point victory.

The Vikings won the battle on the boards, 37-29, but committed 13 turnovers against 6 for the Seahawks. Cabrillo shot just shy of 40 percent at 26-of-70 (35.7) and was 4-for-16 from distance.

The Vikings shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) for the night and knocked down 18-of-24 (75%) from the charity stripe.

The Vikings are back in action Wednesday evening (Feb. 14) to continue their undefeated season and will matchup against Monterey Peninsula College at home. The game is set for a 5:30 P.M. PT tip and will be live-streamed on the West Valley College Athletics YouTube page.
