Vikings scorch Seahawks, sweep 5th-straight season series
CJ Willenborg, here at Cabrillo 1/22, dropped in 24 points in Saratoga
A West Valley team operating at warp speed at both ends of the court ran Cabrillo out of Bob Burton Court 82-60 on Valentine's Day. The wire-to-wire win clinched the 5th-consecutive season series sweep over the Seahawks, with the Vikings taking those ten games by an average of 17.2 points.
Jake Davis and CJ Willenborg split the game's first 12 points and, after a Willenborg three from the logo, the Vikings had a 37-12 lead. The Seahawks (15-11, 7-3 Coast-South) found a pulse late in the half and closed to within 42-26 at intermission. West Valley (23-3, 10-0) poured in eight three-pointers in the first half and were nearly as hot after the break with five more. The Vikings connected on 16 2nd-half baskets to only six from Cabrillo. If not for 19-for-20 2nd-half freethrow shooting by the Seahawks...well, you get the idea.
Willenborg's stat line read 24 points with five threes, five rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Davis chipped in with 17 points, including, arguably, the dunk of the season with 8:41 left in the 1st half. Bryce Buchanan pulled down eight of WVC's 43 rebounds (WVC out-boarded Cabrillo 43-22), while Caleb Asante had seven points, five boards and five assists. Amari Gray also handed out five assists.
West Valley wraps up the Coast regular-season home schedule Wednesday (2/19) against Hartnell (4-22, 3-7). A Viking win clinches at least a Coast-South championship tie for the 4th time in five years. Tipoff Wednesday is 5:30pm.
