Vikings reclaim Coast-South top spot with win over Ohlone
Kenji Colston (4) celebrates his 2nd-inning three-run HR against Ohlone
West Valley made it 2-0 against Ohlone in this week's series between the two Coast-South Conference front-runners with a wire-to-wire 6-1 win at Valhalla Thursday. The Vikings improved to 12-2 in the Coast South, 26-8 overall, while the Renegades dropped to 11-3 and 28-6. The series concludes Saturday (4/12) at Ohlone.
Kenji Colston's 2nd-inning three-run homer knocked in Isaac Hawthrone and Eric Altmark and staked WVC to a 3-0 lead they would not relinquish. Jordan Montez drove in Altmark with an E5 in the 4th to give the Vikings a 4-0 cushion.
Meanwhile, Viking starter Nico Wagner was mastering the Renegades. Wagner went six complete, striking out four, and recording inning-ending K's in the 1st, 2nd and 5th innings. The one to end the 5th was particularly noteworthy as the Renegades had just scored on a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-1. Wagner got Teagan Reilley looking to end the threat with three Renegades stranded. A trio of Viking relievers - Jake Jones, Kyle Scritzky and Bryce Berry - kept Ohlone in check the rest of the way.
The Vikings added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the 5th. Altmark singled in Carmelo Rivera and Hawthrone doubled home Altmark for the final 6-1 score.
Altmark, Colston and David Estrada each had two of West Valley's nine hits. Wagner earned the win on the mound, improving to 6-2 on the year.
Saturday's first pitch in Fremont is 1:00pm.
