Lee/Son capture Coast Conference doubles crown

Lindsay Lee and Faith Son battled the elements and the best the Coast Conference had to offer to win the Coast doubles championship Saturday at Chabot College. A three-hour rain delay forced Championship Saturday to begin at noon rather than its scheduled 9am start time. Then, an epic singles championship between Lee and Foothill's Lana Loviagina took more than three hours to complete. (More on that later.)  

Son and an exhausted Lee took the court against City College of San Francisco's Linda Geballe and Christina Ling at 4pm. Three hours later, Lee and Son stood victorious after a magnificent 7-5, 3-6, 10-7 win over the Ram pair. The marathon match capped a perfect tournament for Lee and Son and showcased a brilliant week for Lee.

Lee played seven matches in three days, going 6-1 in singles and doubles play and knocking off the Coast's top singles seed, CCSF's Ariel Xu, 6-2, 6-4 in Friday's semifinal.

After waiting for the rain to subside and the courts to dry Saturday morning, Lee and Loviagina battled back and forth for three hours. Much like Nadal and Federer at Wimbledon in 2008, Lee and Loviagina matched each other stroke for spectacular stoke. Loviagina took the opening set 6-1, but Lee stormed back to take the second 6-4. Set three went the distance before ultimately going to Loviagina 7-5.

Lee barely had a chance to catch her breath before she amazingly teamed with Son for another three-hour tug-of-war. This time, the Vikings took the crown.

Both Lee and Son were named to the All-Coast conference team, the second-straight honor for Lee. The pair will be joined by Vikings Kristina Gazaryan, Angelica Harlan Aparicio, Huiguan Liu and Bailey Sylva at the 2024 3C2A Championships at Ojai April 24-28.
