West Valley women’s soccer falls 3-0 to a top-20 team

SAN JOSE -- West Valley women's soccer held another top-20 team close but couldn't hold one of the state's top scorers quiet, falling to No. 16 Evergreen Valley, 3-0.

After a 3-0 victory of its own against De Anza, West Valley (5-10-1, 2-5 Coast-North) couldn't find its same success against the Hawks (12-6-1, 5-3-1 Coast-South). It's still been an overall successful month on the offensive end for West Valley, which scored 16 times in October, marking a season-high.

In October, five different goal-scorers contributed to those 16 goals, with Ximena Heredia leading the charge. After a brace against De Anza, she now leads the conference with 14.

But 37 minutes into the contest against the Hawks, Evergreen Valley forward Bianca Ahumada finished a pass from Kylee Cowen for her 14th goal of the season.

It continued the Vikings' trend against terrific teams -- they're clearly talented enough to keep up with the top teams in the state. Against No. 19 Hartnell, the Vikings led for a majority of the match.

56 minutes in, Rubyna Mamarian took one past Viking keeper Soleana Chavez unassisted to double the Hawks' lead and provide some insurance.

Ahumada would scored again 23 minutes later, banking in her 15th of the year, to complete the 3-0 lead.

The dynamic Hawks defense posted its fourth clean sheet in the last six matches played as they continue to climb the conference rankings.

For the Vikings defensively, Chavez continued to be the anchor in the back line, saving five shots. She's reached that mark four times this season, including nine in a shutout against Venture and 14 against Folsom Lake. She leads the conference in saves and is third in save percentage.

West Valley continues conference play on Tuesday in a double-header with the men's side. First kick is scheduled for 12:30 as the Vikings aim to get back into the win column against Foothill.
