Watson returns to WVC as women's water polo coach
3C2A Hall of Fame coach Bruce Watson is the new West Valley women's water polo coach, Associate Vice Chancellor of Intercollegiate Athletics John Vlahos recently announced. Watson replaces Erika Vargas, who is the new Dean of the WVC School of Health and Human Development and who coached the Vikings to a 156-35 record from 2017 to 2023.
After leading the San José St. men's program from 2014-2022, Watson returns for his second West Valley coaching stint. He amassed a 638-184 career record and six 3C2A state championships (1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2010) in 31 seasons as the Viking men's coach. He was a five-time 3C2A Coach of the Year.
West Valley women's water polo is one of the state's elite programs, capturing six consecutive undefeated Coast championships (2018-2023), four straight NorCal titles (2019-2023), three 3rd-place state finishes (2019, 2022-23) and the 2021 state championship.
