Men’s basketball cruises to bounce-back win over Gavilan

SARATOGA -- After a crushing loss on the road at Cabrillo, the Vikings returned to Bob Burton Court and thrashed the Gavilan Rams, 96-40.

Four Vikings (15-6, 4-2 Coast-South) finished in double figures as the Rams (2-20, 1-5 Coast-South) went on a couple of long scoring droughts and could never catch up after an early lead.

The game was back-and-forth for the first handful of minutes. Sophomore guard CJ Willenborg hit a 3 on the games' first possession, a sign of good things to come, but Rams leading scorer Trey Miller scored five points in response. After a couple traded buckets, the Rams had a 7-5 lead.

But the Vikings took momentum and ran with it. Sophomore forward Will Amoah continued his stretch as one of the best offensive rebounders in the state, grabbing a pair in the span of a minute and notching four overall. Freshmen guards Cyrus Hassan and Jayden Minor had strong play early, with Hassan nailing a big 3 and Minor providing two-way pressure.

After falling behind early, West Valley went on a 30-3 run led by Willenborg, who reached his tenth point of the game just one possession after Gavilan had reached its tenth as a team. For the second time this season, Willenborg hit six 3's (tied for second-most in a game in West Valley modern history) and finished with a game-high 24 points.

It was a phenomenal answer from Willenborg, who was held 0-7 from downtown in the loss to Cabrillo but has been the Vikings' best offensive player for the better portion of the last six weeks.

Bryce Buchanan continued his efficient stretch, reaching double digits with 11 points and five rebounds. Since December 19th, Buchanan is shooting over 70% from the field while being strong on the boards. He finished the Gavilan contest 5-of-6 from the charity stripe to boot. West Valley went into the halftime locker room with a commanding 26-point lead.

The second half was the Antonio Kellogg Jr. show. The freshman guard, who has also picked up his scoring this season, was a pest on the defensive end and hit three 3's for the first time this season to tally 13 points. It felt like he was a factor in every passing lane while making the right reads as a passer on the offensive end and even swatting away a shot.

West Valley cruised in the second half, resting most of its starting five for the games' last eight minutes. Caleb Asante, who returned from a length injury against Cabrillo, finished with six efficient points and blocked a shot as well.

Everyone who saw the floor for the Vikings scored at least two points as Willenborg, Buchanan, Kellogg and Amoah finished in double figures. Amoah had his seventh double-double of the year, and the Vikings nailed 13 3's as a team.
