Vikings swamp Seahawks to claim Coast regular season title

For the 4th consecutive year, the West Valley men's water polo team is the undefeated Coast Conference regular season champion. The Vikings (19-3, 5-0 Coast) overwhelmed Cabrillo (2-16-1, 2-2) 19-2 Wednesday in Aptos to lay claim to the title. Up next for the Vikings is a SoCal roadtrip to the Cerritos College Mini for a battle with 7-time defending state champion Golden West, a team tied with West Valley for the top spot in this week's CCCWPCA Top Ten, and a pair of other Top Ten squads.

The Vikings sprinted to an 8-0 1st quarter lead at Cabrillo, scoring on its first six posessions without surrendering a Seahawk shot on goal. Ethan MacLeod led the opening surge with a goal and four assists. The score was 9-1 at halftime and 14-1 after three.

Zalan Hegedus paced WVC scorers with a game-high four goals, followed by three from Tristan Grimett and two each from Mateja Cetkovic and MacLeod. Cetkovic grabbed five of WVC's season-high 32 steals, while Phil Portisch came away with four. Danny Rendon, Michael Rohlfing and Liam Rogers, who also had three assists, all recorded three steals.

The Vikings go up against Golden West (21-1) and 9th-ranked Cerritos (11-6) Friday at the Cerritos Mini and then take on #3 Long Beach City (11-2) Saturday.
