2024 Vikings look to build on brilliant 2023 season

Coach Gaspar Silveira and the West Valley men's soccer team returned to its accustomed place among the state's elite teams in 2023. A Coast-South championship and a run to its first NorCal title appearance since 2018 signaled a rebirth and laid a foundation for a bright future. The 2024 Vikings are one of the youngest teams in the 3C2A and will take the pitch against nine 2023 playoff teams in an 18-game schedule.

West Valley finished 2023 atop the Coast-South with a 9-3-1 mark, 14-4-3 overall, and entered the NorCal postseason as the north #3 seed. The Vikings posted playoff shutouts over Las Positas (3-0) and Folsom Lake (1-0) to earn a berth in the NorCal title fixture at #2 Santa Rosa. The game ended 1-1, with the Bear Cubs advancing to the state tournament final four with a 5-4 PK advantage.

The 2024 campaign begins Sept. 5 at CaƄada, followed by the Sept. 7 home opener at Dick Schwendinger Field against Highway 17 rival Cabrillo. Coast Conference competition commences Oct. 1 with a home fixture against perennial power Foothill and concludes Nov. 15 with Dick Schwendinger Field derby versus De Anza.

The 2024 Vikings welcome two dozen first-year and six returning sophomores to the lineup. All-Coast 1st-team midfielder Shawn Garlick returns to anchor the defense, the most recent of Silveira's legacy of top-flight mid-pitchmen. Silveira has been at the Viking helm for 33 years and has 20 NorCal playoff appearances, ten Coast championships and more than 400 wins.
