Efficient Vikings trounce Taft, host Rams in Super Regionals
Gabriella Diotalevi was 3-for-3 with two RBI against Taft Saturday
West Valley scored 22 runs on 26 hits in twin 11-0 five-inning wins over Taft at last weekend's 3C2A NorCal Regionals at Viking Field. The series sweep thrusts the top-seeded Vikings (39-3) into the Super Regional round against No. 8 Fresno City (30-12) May 9-10 at Viking Field. The winner of that series will advance to the 2025 3C2A State Championships May 15-18, also at Viking Field.
No. 16 Taft (24-17) had no answer for West Valley's high-powered offense that finished the regular season in the 3C2A's top ten in 13 offensive categories. Friday afternoon's series opener saw the Vikings at their efficient best, rapping out eight singles and a triple and driving in all 11 runs in the first and third innings.
Andrea DeJesus got things started in the bottom of the first, scampering to second on an E3, and scooting home on a Rylee Gomez single. Brianna Chambers Lee walked and Jasmine Mixco reached on an E6 to load the bases. Raylene Cruz singled in Mixco followed by an RBI walk issued to Alexis Bojorquez-Nava that pushed in Chambers Lee. The 3-0 was never threatened, as WVC starter Ashlie Nakano was setting the Cougars down in order in the first, second and fifth. The top of the fourth ended in a DeJesus-to-Ditalevi-to-Cruz double play.
11 Vikings came to the plate in the third. Chambers Lee and Mixco opened the inning with singles, Cruz brought Chambers Lee home on an E2 and Bojorquez-Nava singled in Mixco. A bases-loaded walk to Diotalevi scored Cruz, followed by a Tyla Arbuckle single that knocked in Bojorquez-Nava. Makayla Villapando, who had walked, came home on a DeJesus SAC fly to left, and Arbuckle scored easily on a Gomez single. Mixco closed the scoring with a two-run triple that brought home Chambers Lee and Gomez. Six singles, a triple, two walks, a stolen base and an error turned into eight runs and an insurmountable 11-0 WVC lead.
Nakano, who improved to 12-0 with the win in the circle, just missed a complete game, giving way to Sarah Habkirk with two outs in the top of the fifth. Habkirk struck out a swinging Julia Gutierrez to end it two innings early.
Gomez finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Chambers Lee was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, and Mixco went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Bojorquez-Nava and Cruz joined Gomez and Mixco with two RBI apiece.
A five-run fith capped Saturday's 11-0 game-two victory. The Vikings jumped out early on a Chambers Lee double in the first that knocked in DeJesus. Arbuckle's two-run single highlighted a two-run second, and Bojorquez-Nava tripled in Mixco and Diotalevi singled in Bojorquez-Nava to key a two-run third. West Valley ended it early with a five-run fifth that featured Diotalevi's RBI-double, a DeJesus run-scoring single, a Gomez RBI-sacrifice fly and an Ella Moser triple that brought home Chambers Lee.
Outside two singles and a pair of walks, Viking starter Amelia Sizemore and her off-speed pitches completely shut down the Cougars. She started off the game with two K's and ended the fourth with another to move to 8-2 in 2025. Arbuckle was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day with two RBI, two runs and two stolen bases. Diotalevi was also perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Chambers Lee finished 3-for-4, and Bojorquez-Nava earned three walks.
The best-of-three West Valley Super Regionals start Friday (5/9) at 2:00pm. Saturday's schedule has game two at noon, followed by an if-necessary game at 2:00pm. West Valley hosted Fresno City April 19 in an entertaining doubleheader won 11-6 and 9-2 by the Vikings.
