Vikings Earn First Win at Delta Classic
STOCKTON - The Vikings dropped the first two games of the Delta Classic Tournament Friday afternoon falling to 0-4 on the young season. They rebounded by splitting their two games on Saturday and ended the tournament on a high note with their first win of the year.
West Valley played two matches on Friday, sending both to five sets. The scores of the first match against Solano tallied 19-25, 25-22, 30-28, 19-25, and 9-15 in the final set resulting in a loss to open the tournament.
In the second match the Vikings went up against hosts of the tournament, San Joaquin Delta College. After losing the first set 14-25, the WVC won the next two, 25-18 and 25-21 setting up a do or die fourth set. The Vikings lost, 21-25 and sent the match to a fifth set where they
eventually lost in a close 11-15 score.
After going 0-2 Friday, West Valley turned to day two of the Delta Classic and opened up with a loss Saturday morning to Santa Rosa. 25-17, 11-25, 22-25, and a close 24-26 score put the Vikings at 0-3 on the weekend.
In their fourth match of the weekend, the Vikings played Shasta College and finally got their first win. Going back and forth the first four sets, 25-21, 21-25, 25-14, 23-25, West Valley prevailed in the final set by a score of 15-6 and won the match.
The Vikings are now 1-5 on the season and look to build off of their first win.
