Vikings rally past Ohlone to set up winner-take-all match with CSM
Rachel Sanchez came up with 10 digs at Ohlone
The West Valley volleyball team completed a season sweep of Ohlone with a 3-1 comeback win in Fremont Wednesday night. The 25-27, 25-19, 29-27, 25-17 win sets up a Coast-South Conference championship showdown with College of San Mateo Friday night (11/8) in Saratoga. The Vikings (13-12, 8-1 Coast-South) and the Bulldogs (18-6, 8-1) are deadlocked atop the standings heading into the regular season finale.
Ohlone (20-6, 6-3), arguably one of the best 3rd-place teams in the state, ran into the lethal combination of Sophie Ehret and Francesca Zanotti again Wednesday. Ehret and Zanotti, who had 35 kills and 57 assists, respectively, in a thrilling five-set win in Saratoga Oct. 15, were equally dynamic in Fremont.
Ehret connected on 28 kills, hitting .400%, thanks, in large part, to Zanotti, who finished a match-high 49 assists. Ehret's stat line also included 13 digs and a solo block. Zanotti came up with five digs, five crucial service aces and a pair of blocks. Jess Watanabe led the defense with 15 digs, followed by 10 from Rachel Sanchez. At the net, Julia LaPierre recorded 12 kills, also hitting at a .400% clip, followed by seven kills from Rowynn Funk and five from Emma Landaverde, who has made a big rotation impact since returning Oct. 25 after missing the season's first 21 matches with an injury.
The Vikings fell at CSM in an epic 20-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 match Oct. 23. The Bulldogs' only conference loss was a 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 sweep at Ohlone Oct. 30. First serve Friday is 6:30pm.
