Vikings pick up another top-15 victory
SARATOGA -- Two days following a rare blip from the pitching staff in a 21-7 victory on the road, No. 3 West Valley softball returned to Viking Field and used strong play in the circle and timely hitting in a takedown of No. 11 Cabrillo.
The Vikings (24-1, 4-1 Coast) have won their last five games, three of which have come against top-20 teams in the latest coaches' poll. They halted an eight-game winning streak from the Seahawks (19-6, 3-2 Coast), lengthening a terrific start to the West Valley season. Viking pitching allowed just two hits in a 5-2 victory.
Kaylee Kline took the bump for the Vikings, setting down the side in order in the first inning while striking out a pair. West Valley's bats rewarded her with a three-run bottom half, giving the freshman some cushion. The most impressive part of the bottom of the first was not just the fact that the Vikings scored off Cabrillo ace Makayla Ogan, but the way they did so already with two outs on the board. Raylene Cruz protected with two strikes and singles before a trio of doubles from Angie Fulkerson, Lexi Bojorquez-Nava and Destiny Solis gave the Vikings a three-run lead.
That trio, featuring two freshmen and a sophomore, has been incredible this season while packing a punch in the heart of the Vikings' lineup. Fulkerson became the first Viking to reach ten doubles this season and has also added a pair of home runs, and Solis is hitting a team-best .403 with four extra base hits over her last six games.
Kline (6-1) allowed her lone run of the game in the second, with Cruz unable to field a grounder and two fielders' choices setting runners on the corner. The Seahawks executed a double steal, with the lead runner coming home before the tag was applied at second.
But the Vikings answered right back in the bottom half, with Ella Moser walking on four straight pitches and stealing second to set the scene for the top of the order. Izzy Paskert's ground ball to the left side couldn't be fielded cleanly, and as it clanked into left, Moser came home to score. Cruz added on some more insurance with a base hit of her own to score Paskert.
The Vikings' freshman righty Kline was terrific the rest of the way. In the top of the third, she struck out a batter and retired the side in order. In the fourth, she allowed a leadoff single but coaxed a double play. She got two pieces of soft contact and punched out another in the fifth. And in the sixth, she struck out the final batter she faced before being replaced. In all, Kline went 5.1 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five.
Bri Padilla came in to replace Kline, striking out a pair to finish the sixth. In the seventh, with the Vikings still holding a four-run lead, a leadoff double would come around to score, but Padilla set down Kaylen Wingard to end the game.
Next up, the Vikings have a chance for not one, but two top-15 wins on Saturday, taking on No. 15 Sierra in a double header.
