Vikings take four at Nyquist Invitational
Mateja Cetkovic scored six against SJ Delta
Another year, another Nyquist Invitational. And, another four wins for the West Valley men's water polo team. The Vikings welcomed eight teams - Cal Poly SLO, Cerritos, Diablo Valley, Long Beach City, Merced, Modesto, San Joaquin Delta and Ventura - to steamy Saratoga for two days of polo at the longstanding tournament. Both days, WVC was the best team in the water.
West Valley (4-0) opened the tournament, and the season, Friday morning with a 26-12 win over SJ Delta (2-6). Mateja Cetkovic had a game-high six goals, while Frank Sunseri finished with five and Lucas Castro three. In Friday's game two, a battle of Vikings, West Valley took care of 2023 3C2A state tournament team, Long Beach City, 17-5. Phil Portisch led the offense with six goals, followed by five from Taine Pickering and three from Cetkovic.
The Vikings took on Cerritos (3-1), another 2023 state tournament team, Saturday morning. Seven goals from Portisch led WVC to a 20-5 win over the Falcons. Ethan MacLeod added three goals for West Valley. A 3rd 2023 state tourney team, Modesto, was WVC's Saturday afternoon foe and met the same fate as West Valley's other three Nyquist opponents. WVC's 24-10 victory was paced by four goals from Cetkovic and three each from Alex Portera and Sunseri.
Ethan Ivey earned the wins in goal against Delta, Long Beach and Modesto, while William McKeon stopped 11 for the win against Cerritos shots.
