Kellogg Jr, staunch defense lead Vikings to a momentum win over Hartnell
SARATOGA -- Less than a month removed from setting program records for largest margin of victory and fewest points allowed in a game against Hartnell, No. 11 West Valley nearly repeated both feats against the same team.
The Vikings (19-6, 7-2 Coast-South) are winners of five straight games for the first time this season after their takedown of the Panthers (0-25, 0-9 Coast-South) and are just a game behind San Jose City at the top of the rankings.
Unlike the first time these two teams played this season, the game never was close, with the Vikings holding a 20-point lead before Hartnell even reached five points and winning in the end, 99-38.
Hartnell opened the floor without its two top scorers, Blake Dibble and Suheib Ibrahim, leaving the Panthers with only Colbyn Draper averaging double figures. Draper and Jorge Espino were the Panthers' primary ball handlers early on, but on the perimeter, Isaiah Ackerman and Caleb Asante held tough while William Amoah locked down the inside.
While CJ Willenborg has been ascending to one of the top players in the state for a while now, he's now cemented as a game-changing guard. After dropping 23 points in Monday's win over East Los Angeles, Willenborg started the scoring for the Vikings against Hartnell, knocking down a pair of jump shots early to create separation.
But the biggest contributions for the Vikings came off the bench. Freshman guard Antonio Kellogg Jr, who has struggled from beyond the three-point arc at times throughout the season, played lights out basketball, finishing with over 20 points for the first time as a Viking while nailing a career-high five 3's.
Ryan Roth, who has similarly caught fire and has become one of the conferences' top knockdown shooters, hit a trio of 3's coming off the bench as Hartnell failed to cover him defensively.
Overall, guys like Willenborg, Asante and Amoah got to rest the entire second half with the Vikings already up 30 at the break.
