Vikings punish Foothill 5-0 in Coast opener
Brian Diaz watches his 1st half shot head goalward
West Valley spent almost the entire 1st half in the Foothill side of the pitch but came away with but a single goal. That changed in the 2nd half, as the Vikings scored a quartet of goals, resulting in a 5-0 Coast Conference-opening win over the Owls in the searing heat at Dick Schwendinger Field. The Vikings (3-2-0, 1-0-0 Coast-South) were off-target an unofficial five times in the first. They continued the Owl-goal-onslaught in the 2nd with another eight shots, but scored on four of them, all after the 70th minute.
Pavan Nawbatt gave the Vikings the only goal they would need in the 23rd minute off a Shawn Garlick helper. The 1-0 score would remain until a 70th-minute Devin Rosas tally, from Ricky Butron, opened the floodgates. Colby Anger, from Johan Granados, scored at 73' and then Erik Moreno took over. Moreno converted a Harnoor Sidhu pass into a 4-0 Viking advantage in stoppage time and then, just a minute later off a Brian Diaz assist, put the Owls (5-3-1, 0-1-0) out of their misery. Aria Afshar had a trio of saves to earn the clean sheet in goal.
West Valley welcomes Cañada (4-1-3, 0-1-0) to Dick Schwendinger Field Friday (10/4) for an important early-season Coast contest. Kickoff is 4:00pm.
