Viking offense stays as hot as the weather in win at ARC
Deanna Luna had two goals at American River
After scoring eight times last week against Diablo Valley, West Valley continued its incendiary ways with a 5-1 win over American River in triple-digit heat in Sacramento. The lethal Viking trio of Amanda Avila, Deanna Luna and Jaz Quach found the back of the net a combined five times as WVC (6-3-1) peppered the cage 14 times.
Avila got the Vikings on the board early, burying an Andrea Gonzalez feed at 1:27. Luna made it 2-0 at 14:33 off a Quach helper. With spectators just returning to their seats after halftime, Quach turned an Ella Cooke pass into a 3-0 lead at 45:11. Kaleia Grinton closed the gap five minutes later for ARC (3-6-2), but Luna countered with her 2nd goal of the fixture at 54:52, with Laura Hernandez assisting. Avila closed the scoring with her team-high 11th goal of the season, 4th best in the state, just before the end of regulation. Ximena Heredia got the assist.
Nevaeh Reyes went the distance in goal, stopping four Beaver shots to improve to 6-2-1 on the year.
After beating three consecutive Big 8 squads (Modesto, Diablo Valley, American River) to end the non-conference schedule, the Vikings finally open Coast Conference competition Friday (10/4) at Foothill (6-2-0). Kickoff is 1:30pm.
