Up 51-15 at halftime, WVC cruises to 49-point blowout of MPC

Bryce Buchanan goes up for two of his game-high 16 points against MPC
Scores of 39-4, 68-23 and 86-29 foreshadowed a 95-46 final score in West Valley's Coast Conference romp over Monterey Peninsula Friday night at Bob Burton Court. The listless Lobos hit just two baskets in the opening 16 minutes, the result of WVC's tenacious defense and rebounding and MPC's tepid shooting.
CJ Willenborg canned a bucket to give the Vikings (16-3, 3-0 Coast-South) a 39-4 lead with 4:59 to go in the opening half. MPC (1-18, 0-3) would go exactly 10 minutes - 14:53 to 4:53 - without a point, while the Vikings hit for 25 in that same span en route to a 51-15 lead at the break. The Vikings grabbed a 57-point lead, their largest of the contest, with 7:47 left on an Akeem Akeredolu jumper that made it 86-29.
Bryce Buchanan paced the West Valley scorebook with a game-high 16 points, followed by a loud 14 from Caleb Asante, 12 each from Akeredolu and Robel Zemmo, 11 from Aaron Biebel, and Elijah Samdahl's 10. Julian Johnson-Rodriguez and Corvell Simmons led the Lobos with nine apiece.
The Vikings head to Aptos Wednesday (1/22) for a crucial Coast-South contest at Highway 17 rival Cabrillo (11-8, 3-0). Tipoff is 5:00pm.
