It didn't take long for West Valley to take command in its Coast Conference contest against visiting Las Positas Wednesday. The Vikings scored on their first four possessions, including three goals from Anastasija Koreni, on their way to an incontrovertible 25-7 swamping of the Hawks from Livermore.
Not to be outdone, Bella Raynes added four scores in the first, while one each from the Sofias, Gaytan and Orlandi Lazzarini, lifted WVC to an insurmountable 9-1 lead heading to the 2nd quarter. West Valley (8-3, 3-0 Coast) outscored the Hawks (1-6, 1-1) 5-2 in the 2nd, 7-2 in the 3rd and 4-2 in the 4th for its highest single-game point total and margin of victory of the season.
Koreni's stat line read six goals, an assist and two steals. Raynes had four goals and now leads the team with a state-3rd-best 34 tallies. Birthday girl Madiha Smallcombe had a career-best four goals, along with an assist and a pair of steals. Orlandi Lazzarini led WVC with five assists, and Alicia Vernon had a team-high three of WVC's 14 steals. Gaytan returned to the WVC Aquatic Center after a Mexican national team commitment with two goals, three assists and a steal. Kayla Tweed turned away eight Hawk shots and had a pair of assists and a steal to earn her eighth victory of the season.
State 4th-ranked West Valley heads south Friday and Saturday for the 2024 Mountie Classic at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. The Vikings take on Cypress (3-3), Fullerton (2-6), Palomar (4-4) and state #3 and two-time defending state champion Santa Barbara City (10-2).
