Big first half propells WVC to win at Merced
Bella Raynes had a game-high four goal against Merced
Bella Raynes opened the game with a goal and capped the scoring with her game-high fourth to lead the West Valley women's water polo team to a 12-6 win at Merced Friday. An 8-3 halftime lead was a big factor in WVC's Coast Conference victory and Raynes was a big factor in that five-goal advantage at the break.
Raynes scored the first two goals of the game and had three of West Valley's first five tallies. Mia Sickler-Lopez had two goals in WVC's 5-2 2nd quarter. The Vikings (7-3, 2-0 Coast) outscored the Blue Devils (4-6, 0-1) 4-3 in the second half, as netminder Kayla Tweed turned away six Merced shots.
Sofia Orlandi Lazzarini, Sickler-Lopez and Marte Skibba each rattled the twine twice. Alicia Vernon had two of WVC's nine steals, and Tweed had 12 saves for her 7th win of the season.
The Vikings continue Coast action with a home contest against Las Positas (1-5, 1-0) Wednesday (9/25). The ball drops at 4:15pm.
