Vikings use hot shooting night to take care of business in record-setting win over Hartnell

SALINAS -- Undermanned, overworked and hungry, No. 10 West Valley men's basketball found its offense at a good time in a dominant takedown of Hartnell.

Still without leading scorer Caleb Asante and top defender Aaron Biebel, five Vikings (13-5, 2-1 Coast-South) reached double figures while the stellar defense held the Panthers (0-19, 0-3 Coast-South) to just 35 points in a 102-35 victory.

Both the 67-point margin of victory and the 35 points West Valley allowed are the best in their respective category since at least the 2012-13 season, when the 3C2A has consistent game-by-game records.

It was a relatively even first half early on, as Hartnell guard Colbyn Draper started the scoring for the Panthers while the Vikings did a solid job on the perimeter to stop leading scorers Blake Dibble and Suheib Ibrahim. Through the first five minutes, West Valley only led 14-8.

But the Vikings dominated from there on out. On the offensive glass, sophomore forwards William Amoah and Bryce Buchanan finished with six and seven, respectively, while David Manea had a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double in which he added five assists.

The story of the night offensively was Ryan Roth. Consistently one of the teams' top shooters in the early part of the season, the sophomore guard went just 8-of-33 from downtown in a mid-December lull, but has scored in double figures in back-to-back games and dropped a career-high 20 points while hitting four 3's against the Panthers.

Joining Roth in double figures were Manea, Buchanan (who also finished with a double-double), sophomore guard CJ Willenborg and freshman guard Isaiah Ackerman. It's another strong performance in a stretch of terrific basketball for Ackerman, who has now scored in double figures in four of his last seven games after doing so just once the entire season prior to that.

The offensive versatility has been on-and-off without Asante and Biebel, but West Valley did all the little things right against Hartnell: the Vikings grabbed 20 offensive rebounds, picked up 24 assists and of course, shot a season-high 57.5% from the field and 45.5% from deep, their second-highest of the season behind the early season victory over Marin.

West Valley returns home against Monterey Peninsula on Wednesday to continue conference play.
