WVC's De Anza draw delivers 2nd-straight Coast-South crown
The back-to-back Coast-South champions
Friday's annual derby with De Anza, as it often does, had the Coast-South Conference championship at stake, and the regular season finale between West Valley, a game up in the standings entering the game, and the 2nd-place Mountain Lions more than lived up to the expectations of the overflow crowd at Dick Schwendinger Field. The 1-1 draw handed the Vikings their second-consecutive Coast-South crown and a 3C2A NorCal regional home playoff contest. The Vikings (11-4-3, 9-2-2 Coast-South) earned the No. 9 NorCal seed and will host No. 24 Woodland (11-10-0) Wednesday (11/20) at 11:00am.
Friday's game was a physical affair, highlighted by stingy defenses on both sides. The Mountain Lions (12-5-3, 8-3-2) got on the board first on a set-piece, 53rd-minute goal from Alessandro Velasquez. The Vikings got the equalizer 20 minutes later when David Reyna redirected a Pavan Nawbatt shot into the right side of the goal just inside the upright. A desperate De Anza squad, which needed a win to force a conference co-championship, applied the pressure the rest of the way, but were consistently turned away by the Viking defense and goalkeeper Aria Afshar.
When the final horn sounded, the tie seemed like a win for the jubilant Vikings and their faithful. Back-to-back championships feel that way.
The Vikings earned the No. 9 NorCal seed and will host #24 Woodland (11-10) Wednesday at 11:00am. Tickets are available (debit/credit cards only) online or at the gate.
