Vikings wallop Wolverines, move to 18-0
Amelia Sizemore spun a one-run five-hitter at Sierra Thursday
After taking two from a good Yuba College team Tuesday, West Valley headed to Sierra Thursday for a game they had circled on their calendars when the 2025 schedule was first released. The Vikings were bounced from the 2024 3C2A NorCal Regional playoffs by Sierra and the 2025 Vikings were focused on a small measure of payback in Rocklin. West Valley bats were incendiary from the first pitch to the last, pounding out 21 hits, including six for extra bases, in a 30-1 five-inning win over the perennially-powerful Wolverines. WVC improved to 18-0 on the season, while Sierra fell to 5-12-1.
The top of the 1st set the tone for the entire game. Tyla Arbuckle led off with a single up the middle, the first of four consecutive singles for the speedy centerfielder. Andrea DeJesus was plunked and Jasmine Mixco reached on an E4 to load the bases. Two batters later, Rylee Gomez ripped a full-count, two-out bomb over the right-center fence for a grand slam and a 4-0 lead the Vikings would not relinquish. Alina Perez singled, stole second, moved the third on a wild pitch and made it 5-0 on Leah Grifall's RBI single. The inning ended a batter later, but the Vikings were just getting started.
15 Vikings came to the plate in the top of the 2nd. 11 would cross the plate. Arbuckle singled to lead off, stole her state-leading 26th bag (she added another in the 2nd) and trotted home on a DeJesus homer, her 3rd of 2025, over left-center. Four singles (Arbuckle, DeJesus, Gomez, Alexis Bojorquez-Nava), two doubles (Raylene Cruz, Brianna Chambers Lee), and a triple (Cruz) later, the Vikings had a 16-0 lead.
West Valley added two more in the 3rd, while starter Amelia Sizemore was one-hitting the Wolverines. Another 15 Vikings batted in the 4th, as WVC added nine more runs for a 27-0 advantage. West Valley took advantage of five Wolverine errors and walks and two hit batters, while Arbuckle, Ella Moser and Sadie Heming all singled.
Arbuckle finished 4-for-6 with four runs and two RBI, while DeJesus was 3-for-3 with three runs and five RBI, and Gomez was 3-for-4, with three runs and six RBI. Grifall had a 2-for-3, two-RBI, two-run outing. Marissa Rodriguez had a two-run triple and an RBI-single. Jasmine Mixco also had a two-run triple. Sizemore held Sierra to one run on five hits, while striking out three, to earn the win in the circle.
West Valley returns to Viking Field Saturday (3/1) for a noon and 2:00pm twinbill against Butte (1-8-1). They then have a few days of practice before hosting Monterey Peninsula (9-7) March 6 in the Coast Conference opener.
