Vikings rain on Jags' parade, win 2nd-straight undefeated Coast title on SJCC's court
Jake Davis converted seven overtime free throws at San Jose City
A home win Friday night over West Valley would have earned a share of the Coast-South championship for San Jose City. Instead, West Valley won its 2nd-consecutive undefeated conference title with an epic 71-68 triple-overtime victory on the Jaguars' home court. West Valley (25-3, 12-0 Coast-South) outscored City (22-6, 10-2) 10-7 in the 3rd OT behind five points from Jake Davis, a huge Caleb Asante three-pointer and two clutch free throws from Bryce Buchanan.
Regulation was a tale of two halves. West Valley dominated City 31-18 in the first half, but SJCC responded by outscoring the Vikings 30-17 to send it to overtime at 48-48. Tariq Weiser hit a trey at the 1st OT buzzer to erase a 56-53 WVC lead and continue play. All of West Valley's five points in the 2nd OT came at the line, with Asante hitting one, and Davis and CJ Willenborg converting two each.
San Jose scored its final points of the game on two Matt McAndrews charity shots with 3:12 remaining and SJCC up 68-64. Davis made it 68-66 with a pair of free throws at 1:55. Asante's three gave WVC a 69-68 lead with a minute to go, and Davis clinched it with a bucket at :05.
Willenborg paced the West Valley scoresheet with a game-high 16, followed by Davis with 12, Moulaye Soumare's 10 and Asante's loud seven. West Valley extended its four-year overall record to 112-12 with an astounding 46-2 Coast-South mark. The Vikings, to this point, have gone 58-3, 24-0 in conference, since 2023.
Friday's win assures West Valley a likely #2 seed and home games in the 3C2A NorCal playoffs, which begin March 1. Watch this space for schedule specifics once they're announced.
