Viking Volley drops first two to open season, both in 4 sets

Friday afternoon WVC Women's Volleyball opened up their season with tournament play at home. The Vikings hosted the West Valley Tri tournament and played each of the other two teams, American River College and College of the Sequoias.
The Vikings looked strong early, winning the first set in match one against ARC 25-19. They went on to lose the next three sets (18-25, 21-25, 18-25) and the match.
In match two West Valley got off to a slow start losing set one 11-25. Showing some resilience, they answered in set two getting the win to even the match 25-20. The Vikings fought hard against a good COS team but nothing went their way the last two sets of the match. They fell 12-25 and 22-25 and ended up 0-2 on the day to open up their season.
There were some positives to take from Friday's matches. Freshmen Kianna Liggs and Emma Long played big roles in the sets the Vikings won. A young WVC team will have to keep learning from the sophomores and turn the page from Friday.
Head coach Sam Crosson enters his third season leading the Vikings and hopes to repeat playoff appearances he produced in his first two seasons (2023/24 NorCal Regional Final and 2024/25 NorCal Regionals Round 1).
Next game: Friday, September 5 vs. Solano @Delta Classic 1:15pm
