Viking Volley vies for four-peat and a state tourney return

Coach Sam Crossen, in his first year at the helm of the West Valley volleyball team, led the Vikings to their 3rd-consecutive, undefeated no less, Coast-South Conference championship. The Vikings finished 21-4, 10-0 in the Coast, and advanced to the 3C2A NorCal finals for the 4th time in five seasons. The 2024 Vikings are hungry for a program-best 4th consecutive Coast title and a return to their first 3C2A state championship berth since they finished 2nd in the state in 2021. Crossen has a promising roster and an early-season schedule that will prepare WVC for the rigors of the Coast and the postseason.

That schedule includes trips to five pre-conference tournaments, the Cuesta College Tri, the Hartnell Quad, the American River Tri, the City College of San Francisco Tri and the prestigious Delta College Valley Classic, regarded by many as the most competitive tournament in the state. Among a who's-who of perennial NorCal powers on the docket, West Valley will face 2023 state tourney teams Fresno City and American River.

Then the Coast begins. WVC opens conference action at home Sept. 25 against Monterey Peninsula, a 2023 playoff squad and concludes Nov. 8 with a home match against College of San Mateo, also a 2023 playoff team.

Six sophomores return in 2024, including two players, Sophie Ehret and Francesca Zanotti, who are among the 3C2A's best. Outside hitter Ehret was a Coast 1st Team selection after finishing the conference season 2nd in kills-per-set (3.43), and points-per-set (3.9), and 3rd in total kills (281) and points (320). Zanotti, a Coast 2nd Team pick, led the Coast in total assists (903) and assists-per-set (10.38). Ehret and Zanotti make up one of the 3C2A's most-dynamic duos.

Also back for Crossen are MB Rowynn Funk, OH Emma Landaverde, OH Julia LaPierre and LIB Jess Watanabe. Eight highly-regarded newcomers, including 6-0 MB Lavelua Stepp (Leigh High school) and 5-11 MB Elise Peacock (Washington of Fremont) complete the 2024 roster.
