WVC blanks Skyline; Avila wins state scoring title
Amanda Avila scored 32 goals to lead the state in 2024
The West Valley women's soccer team shut out visiting Skyline 2-0 Friday to finish with its best record since 2006. The Vikings (14-5-2, 8-2-1 Coast-North) placed 2nd in the Coast-North and will host an opening-round 3C2A playoff contest. Amanda Avila banged in a 2nd-half goal, her 32nd on the year, to capture the 3C2A scoring title, one year after she scored a state-3rd-best 27.
The Vikings got the only goal they would need when Laura Hernandez converted a Jaz Quach pass in the 55th minute. Avila put it away ten minutes later off a Deanna Luna helper.
The Quach assist was her team-leading 12th, while the Hernandez goal was her 5th of 2024. Nevaeh Reyes kept the Trojans (12-4-3, 7-2-2) off the board with seven saves for her eighth clean sheet and 14th win of the year.
West Valley earned the No. 9 NorCal seed and will host No. 24 Taft (6-10-3) Wednesday, Nov. 20 in the opening round of the 3C2A NorCal regionals. Kickoff is 2:00pm.
