Avila, Rosas, Piatt feted at annual Scarf ceremony

Two premier athletes and one coach were honored at the year-end 2025 West Valley Student-Athlete Scarf Ceremony May 13. Soccer players Amanda Avila and Devin Rosas were named the West Valley Women's and Men's Athlete of the Year, respectively, while softball coach Vicky Piatt received the Coach of the Year award.

The Scarf Ceremony is West Valley's longest-tenured and most prestigious athletic department tradition, spanning decades and honoring thousands of Viking student-athlete graduates. The Athlete of the Year and Coach of the Year awards began in 2017. The 2025 honorees were among the 3C2A's top performers.

Amanda Avila - 2025 Women's Athlete of the Year: After recording arguably the greatest season in West Valley women's soccer history, Amanda Avila was named to the United Soccer Coaches (USC) 2024 Division III All-America 2nd Team. She was also selected to the 2024 3C2A All-State team, was named the Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year, and was the state goal-scoring leader with 34. The sophomore midfielder from San Jose's Presentation High School led the Vikings to a 15-6-2 record, the program's best mark since 2006, and a run into the second round of the NorCal playoffs. She had 10 game-winning goals, and her 10 multi-goal games included three four-goal games. She finished her Viking career with 61 goals, a total that may never be equaled or surpassed.

Her coach, Fred Espinoza said, "She was amazing to see play during her two seasons at West Valley. Her tireless work ethic was an inspiration to her teammates. Her lead-by-example attitude was exactly what this team needed to be as successful as it was."

She finished 3rd in California in 2023 with 27 goals and began filling her trophy case with a plethora of postseason hardware: USC All-West Region, All-State, All-NorCal, Coast Player of the Year, All-Coast 1st Team. After two unprecedented years in Saratoga, she leaves behind a legacy of excellence sure to inspire future Vikings.

Devin Rosas - 2025 Men's Athlete of the Year: Defensive players don't always rack up the stats, but their presence and expertise is undeniable, especially on coach Gaspar Silviera's West Valley men's soccer team. In 2024 the Vikings finished 12-5-3 overall, and won their 2nd straight Coast-South championship with a 9-2-2 record. Statistically, and this is where Devin Rosas comes in, West Valley outscored opponents 50-21, giving up an average just above one per game. A team can win a lot of games with a defense like that. And a defender like that.

In 2024, his 6-4 presence was an unmistakable force that every opponent had to plan for. And, if you throw in his three goals and two assists, teams had to worry about him offensively. He was a United Soccer Coaches All-American, an All-Coast 1st team selection and the Coast Conference Defender of the Year.

Vicky Piatt - 2025 Coach of the Year:  In the last three years, Vicky Piatt's teams have gone 102-25, 34-8 in a conference many consider the toughest in northern California. Her 2025 team finished 42-5, with a perfect 26-0 regular season mark at home. West Valley led the state in wins, win % and was #1 in NorCal RPI and 3rd in state RPI. They finished in the top ten in the state in 13 offensive statistics: runs, hits, RBI, batting AVG, steals, total bases, OBP, SLG%, extra base hits, SAC flies, home runs, triples and doubles.

In the regular season, her Vikings had five players with at least a .400 batting average (all with substantial at-bats), five players with 20-or-more RBI, four with at least four HRs, and three with at least 10 stolen bases. Among Coast players, Tyla Arbuckle led the conference with 44 steals, 19 more than the runner-up, and Dre DeJesus drove in 50 runs, 13 more than the runner-up. Overall Coast team stats had WVC finishing 1st in hits, RBI, walks, AVG, OBP, SLG, runs, steals and total bases. The Viking pitching staff had five players with five-or-more wins and a 2.74 ERA. West Valley outscored opponents by an average of 8.45 to 2.72, scored ten-or-more runs 18 times and run-ruled opponents 16 times. The finished the regular season 22-0 at home and began the season with a 21-game winning streak. West Valley was the #1 team in the state for seven of the 13 weeks the poll was published.
