West Valley clinched at least a tie for the Coast-South Conference title - its fourth in five years - with 101-51 thrashing of Hartnell Wedensday at Bob Burton Court. The win sets up a skirmish for the outright conference crown at 2nd-place San Jose City (22-5, 10-1 Coast-South) Friday (2/21). West Valley (24-3, 11-0) won an epic 79-75 OT battle Jan. 29 in Saratoga.
The Vikings began firing on all cylinders Wednesday after spotting the Panthers a 5-2 lead a minute in. Yigit Arcan buried a three with just under 13 minutes left in the half for a 14-12 WVC lead, and Hartnell (4-23, 3-8) would not lead again.
In fact, the Vikings would go on a 35-5 run to close out the half with a 49-17 advantage. The Panthers would finally break the 20-point mark with 12:14 left, capping a remarkable 55-8 WVC run. The 69-20 advantage would grow to 79-27 at the 7:55 mark and the Vikings would hit triple digits on a Donavyn Washington three with :52 to go.
Bryce Buchanan led Viking scorers with a game-high 18 points, including a Curry-like three-pointer to beat the shot clock with 5:09 remaining. Caleb Asante and Aaron Biebel, who had four of WVC's three-pointers,each chipped in 12, while Jake Davis dropped in 11.
