Vikings storm into 2nd round after blanking Taft
Katherine Meck had two big assists against Taft.
One of the best seasons in West Valley women's soccer history continues after the Vikings shut out visiting Taft 4-0 in the opening round of the 3C2A NorCal Regional championships Wednesday afternoon. The No. 9 Vikings (15-5-2) now travel to Stockton Saturday (11/23) to take on #8 San Joaquin Delta (12-7-3) in round two.
West Valley's defense was the story Wednesday, constantly denying the Cougars (6-11-3) anything resembling an offensive attack. Goalkeeper Nevaeh Reyes stopped all four Taft shots to record her ninth shutout of the year and improve her record to 15-4-2.
The Viking offense, as it has done all season, was firing on all cylinders from the opening whistle. State scoring champion Amanda Avila scored what would be the game-winner 11 minutes in off an assist from Katherine Meck. West Valley would take an insurmountable 3-0 lead into the break on goals from Ximena Heredia (Jaz Quach assist) in the 24th minute and Quach (Meck) at 40'.
An unassisted Avila buried her 34th goal of the year in the 66th minute to close the scoring.
