One of the greatest seasons in West Valley softball history ended unexpectedly with a pair of losses Saturday at the 3C2A Softball State Championships at Viking Field. The Coast Conference champions fell 4-3 to Yuba and 9-0 (6) to Palomar after a scintillating 4-3 walk-off win over El Camino Friday. West Valley finished the year 42-5, its best mark since 2006, which was the last year the Vikings earned a berth in the state championship tournament.

In Friday's opener, the Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead through five, thanks to a Rylee Gomez RBI-double in the third inning and a Jasmine Mixco RBI-sacrifice fly in the fifth. A three-run sixth inning gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead, but  the Vikings staged the comeback of the tournament in the bottom of the seventh.

Brianna Chambers Lee roped a one-out homer to straightaway left, her team-leading sixth of the year, to tie it a 3-3. With two outs, Raylene Cruz walked and was subbed for by Adriana Diotalevi. Alexis Bojorquez-Nava walked and pushed Diotalevi into scoring position at second. Up stepped Makayla Villapando, who singled to the fence at left-center, driving in Diotalevi with the game-winner.

Villapando was named to the All-Tournament team.
